Continued efforts to keep one of Leeds’ oldest buildings in public hands has hit a fresh stumbling block, after councillors voted against holding an inquiry into its sale.

The East Lodge at Temple Newsam is more than 250-years-old, and forms part of the park’s historic gateway – but was put up for sale by Leeds City Council last year, in an attempt to help plug the authority’s “grim” financial situation.

However, Coun Sam Firth (Con) has complained that thorough consultation was not properly carried out with local people over its sale, and used a meeting of the council’s Infrastructure Scrutiny Board to call for an inquiry.
